Manchester United Women have officially completed their first signing of the summer transfer window. 22-year-old Spanish defender Andrea Medina has joined the club on a free transfer, penning a three-year contract.

Medina, who departs Atletico Madrid after four seasons, is already familiar with her new surroundings. She faced United three times in last season's Champions League, an experience that left a lasting impression. "Competing against United last season showed me how strong the group is and just how much this club means to our supporters," she stated upon joining.

Matt Johnson, United’s director of women's football, praised the defender's qualities: "Andrea has all of the technical attributes, character and determination required to thrive at Man Utd. We are delighted to add her unique qualities to our group, particularly after significant interest from clubs across Europe."

While predominantly a left-back, Medina has seen increased usage as a centre-back recently. Her decision to take the No.6 shirt suggests that manager Marc Skinner may view her as a long-term option in the heart of the defence, or as a versatile player capable of rotating between roles. This adaptability will be vital for a team looking to rebuild after an injury-plagued campaign.

Building squad depth was a clear objective for the Red Devils this summer following an underwhelming 2025-26 season. Injuries to key players, including left-back Anna Sandberg, hindered United's progress last year, ultimately keeping them out of the top three in the Women's Super League. The addition of Medina provides necessary cover and competition as the club aims to bounce back.
