From Brighton struggles to World Cup contender: The rise of Deniz Undav

Deniz Undav's path to the top has been anything but conventional. Released by Bremen as a teenager and forced to work in a factory while playing in the lower tiers of German football, he only found his professional footing in Belgium. A 2022 move to Brighton initially looked like a step too far, with Undav struggling to replicate his goal-scoring form in the Premier League.

Despite his early difficulties, then-manager Roberto De Zerbi maintained faith in the striker. The turning point arrived late in the 2022/23 season, as Undav began to adapt to the tactical demands of the English top flight. At Stuttgart, Undav flourished, scoring 18 goals in a historic campaign that saw the club qualify for the Champions League. His permanent transfer for a record €32.6 million proved to be an inspired decision. Following a spectacular 2025/26 season with 25 goals and 14 assists, he forced his way back into the Germany squad.

Now at the 2026 World Cup, Undav has become a crucial weapon for Julian Nagelsmann. With three goals and two assists in just 56 minutes, he is a surprise contender for the Golden Boot.
