Jurgen Klopp officially begins Germany tenure as former Liverpool boss outlines vision
Jurgen Klopp has completed his first day as Germany head coach, emphasizing a long-term project rather than a squad overhaul following the 2026 World Cup.

A new era has officially begun in Frankfurt as Jurgen Klopp settles into his role as the head coach of the Germany national team. Having succeeded Julian Nagelsmann in late July, the former Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool manager is fully focused on his new responsibilities.
Klopp’s trademark humor remains intact. In his first official interview with the DFB, he joked about the new title: "I’ve already signed off WhatsApp messages to friends with: ‘Bundestrainer Klopp.’ Nobody would call themselves that, it sounds very awkward. But with my mates, it felt appropriate."
Despite the disappointment of Germany's early exit from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Klopp is firm on his approach: there will be no blank slate. "You might think that when a World Cup hasn’t gone well, you need to start with a blank slate. But that’s completely unnecessary," he explained, noting that he sees enough quality in the current squad to build upon rather than tear down.
Klopp is prioritizing human connection in his early days, planning visits to Bundesliga clubs to meet with domestic coaches and players. "I know the players, but not always the people behind the players. It’s important for me to learn what drives each guy, where he comes from, where he wants to go," he stated.
The German FA is viewing this as a multi-year project. Klopp is expected to name his first squad between Matchdays 3 and 4 of the Bundesliga season. His debut will take place on September 24 away against the Netherlands, followed by a home match against Greece on September 27.
