The USMNT has been dealt a significant setback ahead of their World Cup Round of 16 match against Belgium. It has been confirmed that there is no legal avenue for the team to overturn the red card suspension handed to Folarin Balogun during their victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Under Article 10.5 of the FIFA regulations, a player dismissed via a straight red card is automatically suspended from the team's subsequent match. FIFA officials have clarified that a standard one-match ban resulting from such a dismissal cannot be appealed. The Disciplinary Committee only enters a consultation phase if they decide to impose additional suspensions beyond the mandatory one-game sit-out.
The incident occurred in the 61st minute when Balogun, who had already opened the scoring, landed awkwardly on Bosnia's Tarik Muharemovic. Following a VAR review, referee Raphael Claus issued the red card. According to Opta, Balogun became only the fourth player in history to score a goal and receive a red card in a World Cup knockout match.
Despite the disadvantage, the side coached by Mauricio Pochettino secured a 2-0 win thanks to a Malik Tillman goal. The USMNT dressing room has rallied behind their striker. Christian Pulisic expressed his frustration with the decision, while Weston McKennie described it as a "bogus" call, noting the significance of losing such an important player at this stage of the tournament.
The coaching staff must now pivot to tactical adjustments to compensate for the loss of their top scorer as they prepare to face Belgium.
