Southampton head coach Tonda Eckert has admitted that dealing with the fallout from the 'Spygate' scandal has been deeply difficult. The manager acknowledged that it has been "tough to read" the criticism concerning his role in the events that led to the club's expulsion from the Championship play-offs last season.

The Saints were removed from the play-offs in May after admitting to spying on training sessions held by Oxford United, Ipswich Town, and Middlesbrough. In addition to the play-off expulsion, the club will enter the upcoming Championship season with a four-point deduction.

It hurts for a number of different reasons. It's tough to read some of the things that are out there, I've held my hand up for this judgement on something I have authorised. Tonda Eckert

While the Football Association continues its investigation into the matter—which could potentially result in individual bans—Eckert has praised the process as professional. He remains focused on his immediate responsibilities, aiming to prepare his squad for the challenges of the new campaign.

Despite the controversy, Southampton owner Dragan Solak has publicly backed Eckert, stating he will not be dismissed. Eckert described this support as "humbling" and emphasized the need for unity within the club. The focus is now on the season opener against Watford on 16 August, as the team looks to move forward from the past season's events.
