Flynn Downes: Southampton determined to win Championship

Southampton midfielder Flynn Downes believes he and his teammates possess the necessary determination to win the Championship this season. Despite starting the campaign with a four-point deduction following the ongoing fallout from last season's spying scandal, the squad remains focused on securing the title.

The club is still awaiting a final verdict regarding head coach Tonda Eckert, who has been charged by the Football Association for his involvement in spying on rival clubs. Despite these off-pitch distractions, Downes insists the adversity has only brought the players and staff closer together.

The club, players and staff have really come together. It's as if we have a chip on our shoulder and we want to put those wrongs right, we're going into the season to win the league this year. The 27-year-old, who has made over 100 appearances for the Saints, feels he is in the best shape of his career heading into his fourth campaign. He credits his development to the coaching staff and notes that his tactical understanding and physical condition have significantly improved.

Southampton recently concluded their pre-season training camp in Germany and are now preparing for their competitive opener. They face Colchester United in the Carabao Cup this Saturday before travelling to face Watford in their Championship league debut.
