Liverpool find themselves in an unprecedented position ahead of the new Premier League season. Due to a wave of coaching changes across the league, Andoni Iraola's side will face six teams with new managers in their first six matches. According to Opta, there is no record of this ever happening in the history of England's top flight.
Andoni Iraola, who took charge at Anfield in June, acknowledged that the situation requires extra preparation from the club's analysis department. Facing teams with new managers brings an inherent level of surprise, as opposition tactics are often in flux during the early stages of a manager's tenure.
"We are facing a lot of new managers so there is an extra part of the job to do," Iraola said. "Analysing how they played in previous clubs, certain situations they can use against us, things they have been doing. My analysts, including Tom Webber who joined me from Bournemouth, give me the starting point for my decisions."
The club's tactical preparation relies on advanced platforms like Hudl Wyscout, which allow staff to study formations, game states, and player tendencies. While pre-season footage offers some insight, the focus remains heavily on the established footballing philosophy of the opposition manager from their previous clubs.
There is also curiosity surrounding Liverpool's own approach under Iraola, who has prioritized intensity and fitness during the summer. As the season progresses, the element of surprise will diminish as more data becomes available, but for the opening weeks, tactical flexibility remains key.
In Sunday's opener against Newcastle, managed by Matthias Jaissle, a clash of streaks is expected. Jaissle has a history of winning his debut game at new clubs, while Iraola enters the match on an 18-game unbeaten run dating back to his time at Bournemouth. Both managers are keeping their tactical cards close to their chest ahead of the weekend.
