At this summer's World Cup, Sergino Dest is playing with a level of freedom that makes him a true wildcard for the USMNT. Under head coach Mauricio Pochettino, Dest has transitioned from a traditional full-back into a more advanced attacking role, effectively operating as a winger.
Throughout the group stage, Dest has been a constant threat, ranking among the tournament leaders in successful dribbles. With Alex Freeman providing defensive cover behind him, Dest is no longer burdened by traditional defensive responsibilities. "Everybody knows that my attacking abilities are my best quality, so it gives me a little bit more space and freedom to play higher up the pitch," Dest explained.
This tactical shift allows Dest to take more risks and create numerical advantages in the final third. While he has always been known for his attacking flair, his new role within Pochettino's setup makes the U.S. attack more dynamic and harder to defend against, as he frequently combines with teammates to create chaos on the right flank.
The U.S. now looks ahead to a Round of 32 clash against Bosnia & Herzegovina. Dest, who experienced the harsh reality of knockout football in 2022, believes this group is more mature and confident. He is ready to continue using his newfound attacking license to help the team progress further in the tournament.
