FIFA has abandoned plans to reschedule the highly-anticipated round-of-16 World Cup match between England and Mexico. The governing body confirmed the fixture will proceed at its original time of 18:00 local time (01:00 BST on Monday) following a sudden regulatory reversal.
The proposal to shift the match forward by six hours caused significant logistical concern, with reports initially suggesting weather forecasts were the catalyst, though security and fan safety were later cited as primary drivers. The news caused frustration among both squads, with Mexico manager Javier Aguirre expressing his annoyance at the lack of consultation:
I don't like it at all, and neither do my players. They didn't even ask for my opinion. FIFA organises, FIFA decides, and I comply. We adapt, there are no excuses, and we have to play and win. Javier Aguirre
Thomas Tuchel’s England squad now focuses on the daunting task of playing at the historic Estadio Azteca. The venue sits over 7,200 feet above sea level, providing a significant physical challenge. Furthermore, the hosts maintain an imposing record at the stadium, having lost only twice in 89 international fixtures, meaning England will need to be at their tactical best to progress.
