Argentina marks win over England with National Football Teams Day

The Argentine Football Association has officially declared 15 July as 'National Football Teams Day'. The date is chosen to commemorate Argentina's 2-1 victory over England in the 2026 World Cup semi-final, which was held in Atlanta.
England, managed by Thomas Tuchel, had taken the lead through an Anthony Gordon goal in the 55th minute. However, Argentina staged a dramatic comeback with two late goals in the 85th and 92nd minutes to secure their place in the final.
The victory drew comparisons to the historic 1986 quarter-final between the two nations. The match in Atlanta was also marked by political controversy, as some Argentine players celebrated with a banner referencing the sovereignty dispute over the Falkland Islands, known in Argentina as Las Malvinas.
Following the semi-final, Argentina went on to finish as runners-up after losing to Spain in the final. England concluded the tournament by defeating France 6-4 to secure a third-place finish.
