The qualification process for the 2028 European Championship has sparked controversy due to a sharp contrast with FIFA's approach to the 2030 World Cup. Despite being one of the host nations for the upcoming European tournament, England will not receive an automatic berth in the finals.
Under UEFA's current regulations, the English national team, alongside fellow co-hosts Scotland, Wales, and the Republic of Ireland, must participate in the standard qualifying campaign. The team will be drawn into a qualifying group and must earn their place on the pitch like any other nation.
UEFA has provided only a limited safety net, allocating just two spots for host nations should they fail to qualify through the main groups. This stands in stark contrast to FIFA's ruling for the 2030 World Cup, where Argentina secured direct qualification simply by hosting a single opening match as part of the tournament's centenary celebration.
This discrepancy has led to frustration among fans, who question the fairness of the different rules. While England faces the pressure of a full qualification cycle, Argentina's path was cleared years in advance, despite significant criticism surrounding the team's recent actions.
