U.S. striker Folarin Balogun has been cleared to play in Monday's round-of-16 match against Belgium. FIFA confirmed the suspension of his one-match ban, which was originally issued following a red card in the victory over Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The decision has ignited significant controversy within the football community. UEFA publicly labeled the reversal "incomprehensible" and "unjustifiable," while former UEFA president Michel Platini described the move as shameful. Belgium's head coach, Rudi Garcia, compared the development to an April Fool’s joke.
Reports indicate that the reversal followed significant pressure from U.S. officials and political figures, including President Donald Trump, who advocated for a review of the initial VAR ruling. Trump told reporters he felt it was necessary to ensure the best players remain on the pitch during the tournament.
U.S. head coach Mauricio Pochettino defended the outcome, arguing that the team was unfairly penalized by the initial officiating. For the U.S. side, the reinstatement of Balogun is seen as a crucial step in their pursuit of a potential quarterfinal appearance, their first since 2002.
