Former Premier League footballer Jermaine Pennant has revealed he required more than 50 stitches after being mauled by a dog. The 43-year-old was walking his dogs in north London last week when he was attacked by a German Shepherd.

The former Liverpool and Stoke City winger explained that the dog latched onto his leg and would not let go as he attempted to protect his own pet, King. The situation was only resolved when King intervened to fight off the attacking dog, which Pennant believes prevented a much worse outcome.

«So I was attacked by a German shepherd, I tried to protect King but the dog got my leg, I was on the floor with the dog still attached with no sign of letting go, until King intervened as he didn't know what was going on. But the minute he did he fought the dog off and saved what could've been a horrendous situation for me.» Jermaine Pennant

Pennant sustained four bite wounds that required hospital treatment and more than 50 stitches to his right leg. He confirmed that King remained largely unhurt, suffering only a minor nip on his leg. Pennant stated that he has chosen not to report the incident to the police.
