Liverpool continues to strengthen its squad by investing in one of France's most promising defensive talents. In January, the Reds agreed on a £60 million transfer for 21-year-old Jérémy Jacquet. The club hopes the defender will become a key figure in the team's upcoming defensive transition.
Jacquet, who previously played for Rennes and had a loan spell at Clermont, has already made an impact. After recovering from an injury, he debuted in a pre-season match against Como, scoring a goal in the first half. The performance confirmed the expectations of the coaching staff, who view the Frenchman as a player with exceptional ball-carrying and game-reading skills.
Former Rennes technical director Florian Maurice, who followed the player's development since he was 16, describes him as a "natural force" with rare composure under pressure. "He was very calm in situations where he had to build from the back. He had good defensive skills, but with the ball, he was exceptional," Maurice noted.
Adapting to life on Merseyside will be the primary challenge for the footballer. The club anticipates that daily training alongside Virgil van Dijk will help the young talent reach a new level. Jacquet, who overcame several injuries in his youth, is known for his work ethic and maturity, which keep him focused on his professional development.
Despite the high fee, comparable to Leny Yoro's move to Manchester United, Liverpool's management is confident in the choice. Jacquet is viewed as a long-term investment capable of eventually replacing defensive leaders and becoming a complete, well-rounded player.
