Belgium have been dealt a setback ahead of their second World Cup 2026 group stage match. Winger Jeremy Doku has been ruled out of the clash against Iran due to a recurring respiratory issue.
The health concern flared up in Los Angeles following a difficult night on Saturday. Despite a strong performance in the tournament opener against Egypt, the medical staff confirmed that the infection has worsened, necessitating a course of antibiotics to ensure a full recovery.
Vincent Mannaert, Belgium's sports director, stated that the team will not risk the player's health in the immediate fixture. The current plan focuses on providing the winger with intensive rest and medication in hopes of him returning for the final group match against New Zealand.
Doku's absence forces coach Garcia to adjust the team's offensive setup. Tactical shifts are expected, with Leandro Trossard likely moving to his preferred position on the left flank. Options to fill the vacancy on the right include Dodi Lukebakio, Alexis Saelemaekers, and Charles De Ketelaere.
The Group G standings remain tight, with all four teams locked on one point after the opening round. Securing a result against Iran is now vital for Belgium's aspirations to reach the round of 16.
