Maarten Martens set to join Mark van Bommel’s staff with Belgium

Former AZ head coach Maarten Martens is reportedly set to join the backroom staff of the Belgium national team. The 42-year-old has been out of work since his departure from the Eredivisie club in January and is now expected to become an assistant to Mark van Bommel.

This move marks a significant career shift for Martens, who was previously linked with the head coaching role at Anderlecht earlier this year. During his playing days, Martens earned nine caps for the Red Devils, though he just missed out on the country's peak 'Golden Generation' era.

It is anticipated that Van Bommel’s coaching staff will be comprised primarily of Dutch personnel. The official announcement confirming Van Bommel’s appointment as Belgium's new head coach is expected in the coming days, with a contract reportedly set to run until 2028.

The move comes as Belgium looks to make a strong impact at the upcoming European Championship. Van Bommel’s son, Ruben, has recently hinted that the deal is nearing a successful conclusion, suggesting no further issues are expected in finalizing the appointment.
