Former England striker Gary Lineker, currently covering the 2026 World Cup from New York, has shared his assessment of the French national team. The football legend is convinced that Didier Deschamps' side stands out as the clear favorite to lift the trophy.
Lineker highlighted the incredible depth of the French squad, particularly in the attacking third. He believes their individual talent surpasses any other nation in the tournament. The expert specifically praised the current form of Kylian Mbappé and the resurgence of Ousmane Dembélé, suggesting both could be Ballon d'Or contenders if France wins the title. He also emphasized the special talent of Michael Olise, predicting he will become a global superstar.
Regarding the coaching staff, Lineker pointed to the unquestionable authority of Didier Deschamps. "I don't see anyone better qualified to know how to win this competition," he remarked, adding that the manager's experience and the respect he commands from the players are vital assets for the team.
Despite noting that some nations might possess more balanced midfields, Lineker maintains that France has no real weaknesses. As they head into the Round of 16 match against Sweden, he does not foresee any significant challenges for the French, despite the threat posed by Swedish attackers like Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyökeres.
