England have received a significant boost ahead of their World Cup 1/8 final clash against DR Congo, with Declan Rice expected to return to the starting line-up. The midfielder was sidelined for the victory over Panama to manage a calf issue sustained against Ghana, but he is now fit for the knockout rounds.
Manager Thomas Tuchel is keen to restore his premier ball-winner as the tournament enters the business end. Rice completed the final training session before travel to New Jersey, with Tuchel noting that the player is in a positive state of mind and ready to handle the intensity required.
He's just in a sweet spot after his injury. He's happy to play again, he just feels free. He needs to play with this intensity, he loves to play on this kind of stage. Thomas Tuchel
However, the camp is facing a defensive dilemma. Defender Jarell Quansah, who had been covering at right-back, suffered an ankle injury against Panama and is a doubt for the upcoming match. Tuchel is currently weighing up tactical alternatives, including Djed Spence and Ezri Konsa, to maintain defensive stability in Atlanta.
