Bayer Leverkusen left-back Alex Grimaldo could be heading back to Spain this summer. According to journalist Matteo Moretto, Atletico Madrid is working to secure the 30-year-old and is currently engaged in negotiations with the German club.
Bayer Leverkusen is reportedly seeking a total package of around €25 million, including bonuses. Atletico Madrid, however, is currently unwilling to exceed a total of €18–20 million. The core issue lies in the payment structure: the Spanish side is offering only €10–13 million in guaranteed payments, with the remainder dependent on performance-based add-ons.
Bayer signed Grimaldo on a free transfer in the summer of 2023 following his departure from Benfica. Since then, he has established himself as a key figure in Leverkusen's squad, recording 14 goals and 12 assists in 46 appearances during the 2025/26 season.
Grimaldo's desire to return to his home country is seen as a key factor that could help facilitate a deal. Negotiations are ongoing, with both clubs hoping that their positive relationship will lead to a compromise on the financial terms.
