Atletico Madrid have opened discussions regarding a potential transfer for Tottenham captain Cristian Romero. The Argentina defender, who signed a new four-year deal with Spurs last August, is widely expected to leave the club during the upcoming summer transfer window.
Diego Simeone has long identified Romero as a primary target to bolster his defensive line, and the Spanish side is now pressing ahead with concrete attempts to secure the centre-back. Tottenham are aware of the interest, and reports suggest that personal terms for the player will not be an obstacle to a potential agreement.
While Inter Milan has also shown interest in the 28-year-old, Atletico currently appears to be leading the pursuit. Tottenham manager Roberto de Zerbi recently addressed the situation, stating he would respect the wishes of any player who expresses a desire to move on.
The potential departure of Romero comes as Tottenham look to stabilise their squad following a difficult campaign that saw the team finish 17th and narrowly avoid relegation. Meanwhile, fellow centre-back Micky van de Ven is reportedly nearing an agreement on a new five-year contract, highlighting the club's defensive transition plans.
