Celebrations following Mexico's qualification for the 2026 World Cup Round of 16 turned tragic early Wednesday morning. At least two people died during mass gatherings in Mexico City following the team's 2-0 victory over Ecuador.
According to the capital's health department, the victims were a 19-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man. Authorities stated that both died from asphyxiation amid the dense crowds that gathered in the streets immediately after the match.
While local media outlets have reported a potential third fatality, officials have not yet officially confirmed these claims. Local authorities are currently investigating the specific circumstances that led to the deaths.
This marks the second serious incident recorded during the 2026 World Cup. On Sunday, June 28, a shooting at San Pedro Square in San Jose, California—an official tournament fan zone—left one person dead and another seriously injured. These events have prompted increased concern among organizers regarding public safety at mass gatherings throughout the tournament.
