Vito Fasano: The first Venezuelan player in Brazilian football
Vito Fasano, who joined Cruzeiro in 1967, became the first Venezuelan player to feature in the Brazilian league.
The history of football migration from Venezuela to Brazil has a clear pioneer. In 1967, Cruzeiro signed Vito Fasano, a goalkeeper who became the first player from Venezuelan football to play in the Brazilian top flight.
Fasano caught the attention of the Brazilian club's management following his performances for the Venezuelan side Deportivo Italia during that year's Copa Libertadores. His impressive saves against the Cruzeiro squad of that era convinced the club to make the move. He defended the Belo Horizonte side's goal between 1967 and 1968.
Although born in Italy, Fasano formed his sporting identity in Venezuela. In 1969, he officially naturalized to represent the Venezuelan national team in World Cup qualifiers, proving that the Venezuelan market could offer elite talent. His experience acted as a bridge between the two footballing cultures.
For decades, the presence of Venezuelans in Brazil remained a rarity. It was only with the modernization of the Venezuelan league and the rise of the "Vinotinto" national team that players from the country began to frequently join clubs like Fluminense, Santos, and Internacional. The path paved by Fasano was later followed by Carlos Maldonado and, in the 21st century, by players like Seijas and Rômulo Otero.
