Paris Saint-Germain are dealing with the fallout of their 1-0 Trophee des Champions defeat to Lens on Sunday. Beyond losing the silverware, the capital club finished the match with ten men after left-back Nuno Mendes was shown a straight red card in the final moments of the game.
The situation has become more complicated due to the official match report filed by referee Pignard. According to reports, the official used strong language to document the incident, categorizing the defender's actions as a "violent strike off the ball." This specific terminology is typically reserved for severe infractions and has caused significant concern within the Parisian hierarchy.
While PSG are not attempting to contest the on-field decision—accepting that the red card was warranted for the challenge—they are baffled by the phrasing of the report. Club executives argue that the referee's claim of the incident occurring "off the ball" is inaccurate, as they contend that play had already officially resumed when the challenge took place.
The club is now awaiting the final verdict from the official disciplinary commission. Given the harsh phrasing used by the referee, there is a real possibility that the commission could impose a lengthy suspension. For Mendes, who has only featured twice across all competitions this season, the outcome will determine when he can return to the pitch.
