Iran's World Cup campaign has been marred by off-field controversy, with the team facing significant logistical hurdles throughout the tournament. Following their hard-fought draw against Egypt, captain Mehdi Taremi publicly criticized FIFA for failing to support the squad, labeling the situation a total disaster.
The team has been severely impacted by visa issues that prevented 11 key staff members from joining the squad. Furthermore, the decision to base the team in Tijuana while playing matches in the United States has led to exhausting travel schedules. Taremi claimed that FIFA president Gianni Infantino failed to deliver on assurances made after their opening match against New Zealand.
It’s a disaster World Cup; a disaster. FIFA, they have to solve every problem here but unfortunately they could not solve it since the beginning. We don’t have our logistic people here - they don’t have a visa. How is it possible we always have to travel from Tijuana? It’s not fair. Mehdi Taremi
Head coach Amir Ghalenoei echoed these frustrations, specifically pointing to the treatment received from the tournament hosts. Due to political tensions, the team was forced to relocate their training base, and the coaching staff feels the lack of proper recovery time due to travel restrictions has compromised their physical performance.
I urge FIFA to not let the hosts treat teams and players the same way in the future. I hope Mr Infantino will actually stand up to such behaviour. Their behaviour towards us has been really terrible and we hope the world will be aware of that. Amir Ghalenoei
Despite these significant obstacles, Iran remains in contention for a spot in the round of 32 as one of the best third-placed teams. The squad is now waiting on the results of remaining group-stage matches to determine their future in the competition.
