Manchester United set for transfer budget boost from Kambwala deal

Manchester United are poised to receive a welcome financial boost as Willy Kambwala nears his transfer from Villarreal to Italian side Como. The Italian club has reportedly won the race for the defender's signature, beating out competition from Osasuna.

When Kambwala departed for Spain in 2024, Manchester United negotiated a significant sell-on clause, along with a buy-back option and matching rights effective for three years. While the fee received by Villarreal is expected to be modest, the sell-on agreement ensures that United will pocket a percentage of the final sum, providing extra capital for their ongoing recruitment.

The inclusion of robust sell-on clauses has become a hallmark of the new sporting structure at Old Trafford under Ineos. This strategy is now a standard practice for departures, similar to the terms applied to Radek Vitek’s move to Middlesbrough, which included a 35 per cent clause, and the exits of Ethan Williams and Ethan Ennis, who both left with 50 per cent sell-on clauses attached to their transfers.
