Martin O’Neill appointed Celtic manager on permanent basis

Following a successful interim spell that secured a domestic double, Martin O’Neill has signed a one-year deal to manage Celtic permanently.

Martin O’Neill has been appointed as the permanent manager of Celtic following a highly successful spell as interim head coach. The club confirmed on Thursday that the 74-year-old has signed a one-year contract, which includes an option for an additional year.

O’Neill took charge for two interim stints during the 2025-26 season following the departures of Brendan Rodgers and Wilfried Nancy. His second period in charge proved decisive, as he led the team to nine consecutive victories, allowing Celtic to overhaul Heart of Midlothian and secure both the Scottish Premiership title and the Scottish Cup.

It is once again a great privilege for me to continue as Celtic manager. Last season will live long in all our memories and to be part of that success has in a big way whetted the appetite to work again for more days like those and bring our supporters those moments. Martin O’Neill

The campaign was initially defined by instability, following Rodgers' resignation in October and a difficult 33-day tenure under Nancy. O’Neill, who previously managed the club between 2000 and 2005, successfully stabilized the squad, maintaining a 75.5 per cent win rate, the highest in the club’s history.

With the domestic double secured, O’Neill now looks ahead to a full season at the helm, aiming to build on the momentum generated during his dramatic return to Glasgow.
