Legendary Uruguayan striker Luis Suárez has opened up about the internal state of the national team following a challenging start to the 2026 World Cup. Currently, "La Celeste" holds only two points in Group H and faces the real risk of an early exit from the tournament.
Suárez, who watched the 2-2 draw against Cape Verde from the stands in Miami, admitted to feeling powerless while unable to contribute on the pitch. He described the mood among the players as "devastated," but insisted that the group must summon the necessary strength for their final group stage match against Spain.
I feel powerless not being able to do anything. You have the adrenaline of a player, wanting to help the team. But these are the moments where we must demonstrate that courage, that self-criticism, and that Uruguayan character. Luis Suárez
The situation is further complicated by significant injury concerns. Head coach Marcelo Bielsa has confirmed that both Giorgian de Arrascaeta and Ronald Araújo will be unavailable for the upcoming clash due to physical issues. Suárez expressed cautious optimism regarding Bielsa's management, stating he hopes the coach makes the right decisions for the match in Guadalajara.
During the match against Cape Verde, midfielder Maxi Araújo paid tribute to Suárez by celebrating his goal with the striker's signature gesture. The veteran, who is not part of this World Cup squad, noted that the gesture deeply moved him and highlighted the strong bond he maintains with the current group of players.
