Mexico U-20 reach CONCACAF final and secure 2028 Olympic spot
Mexico U-20 staged a comeback to beat Canada 2-1 in the CONCACAF U-20 Championship semi-finals.
The Mexico U-20 national team has advanced to the final of the CONCACAF U-20 Championship after a hard-fought 2-1 comeback victory over Canada. Beyond reaching the tournament final, the result secured Mexico's place in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles.
The match at Estadio Banorte started poorly for Mexico, as Canada took a surprise lead in the 6th minute through a powerful long-range strike from Owen Graham-Roache. Mexico struggled to find an equalizer before the halftime whistle.
In the second half, tactical changes paid off immediately for the Mexican side. Just three minutes after the restart, Cristobal Alfaro scored a long-range goal to level the score. The momentum shifted in Mexico's favor, and in the 77th minute, Santiago Sandoval was fouled in the box, leading to a penalty. Hugo Camberos stepped up and calmly converted from the spot to complete the comeback.
Mexico will now face the United States in the final of the CONCACAF U-20 Championship. The victory carries significant weight, as it not only keeps their pursuit of the regional trophy alive but also guarantees their participation in the 2028 Olympics.
