Kylian Mbappe has emerged as one of the standout performers at this World Cup. In the round of 32 victory against Sweden, the 27-year-old forward scored twice, securing a 3-0 win for France. This display saw him set a new record, reaching 10 career goals in World Cup knockout stages, the highest tally in history.
Mbappe is currently tied with Lionel Messi on six goals in the race for the Golden Boot. Notably, the Frenchman has reached 18 goals in just 18 career World Cup appearances, maintaining a remarkable efficiency compared to the tournament's historical standards.
This performance marks a significant shift from his recent struggles at Real Madrid. The club endured two consecutive seasons without a major trophy, a period marked by fan criticism, recurring injuries, and internal dressing-room tensions during the tenure of Alvaro Arbeloa. Mbappe frequently became the focal point of the dissatisfaction following the team's poor form.
However, while representing France, Mbappe appears revitalized. His relationship with head coach Didier Deschamps and fluid chemistry with his attacking teammates have allowed him to play with renewed confidence and freedom, contrasting sharply with his recent club campaign.
Looking ahead, Mbappe is set to return to a club undergoing a transition. With Jose Mourinho back at the helm, there is optimism that this World Cup form can serve as a turning point. Real Madrid’s leadership has reaffirmed that the forward remains central to their long-term plans as they seek to rebuild.
