Ahead of their World Cup Round of 32 match against Paraguay, Germany forward Kai Havertz has responded to recent criticism surrounding the squad. Former England striker Gary Lineker recently claimed in an interview with L’Equipe that this is "one of the weakest" Germany sides he has ever seen, suggesting they would struggle significantly if they faced France in the next round.
Havertz dismissed the comments, stating that the squad is focused on their own performance rather than outside noise. "Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I didn't even notice it myself," said the 27-year-old Arsenal striker. "Of course, during a tournament like this, a lot of people start talking about you. But I don't think anyone in the squad pays much attention to it."
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. We already have plenty of experts in our own country – if people in other countries start as well, at some point enough is enough. It's always easy to criticise us from the outside. But I really couldn't care less. Kai Havertz
The team is currently navigating a period of intense scrutiny following a 2-1 loss to Ecuador in their final group match, which raised concerns about their tactical discipline. Germany legend Toni Kroos has also vocalised his disappointment, specifically highlighting a lack of physical grit within the squad compared to past generations.
Havertz and his teammates are now solely focused on the immediate challenge against Paraguay. A strong performance in the knockout stages is seen as the only way to silence the critics and dispel the narrative that they lack the mental toughness required to compete for the title.
