Iraq national team striker Ayman Hussein, a national hero for his country, faced a seven-hour detention at a Chicago airport shortly after arriving in the United States on June 14. The player was held by immigration authorities for an extensive verification process before being cleared to join his squad.
Hussein, who plays for Al-Karma, is the focal point of the Iraqi attack. He earned legendary status in his homeland after scoring the winning goal against Bolivia in the intercontinental playoff, which secured Iraq's first appearance at a World Cup in 40 years.
The incident highlights the logistical and migration challenges surrounding the tournament, as Iraq prepares for a difficult group stage. Despite the delay, Hussein successfully joined his teammates and maintained his form, scoring Iraq's only goal in their 4-1 loss to Norway.
His physical presence in the box and aerial threat remain the primary hope for the Iraqi team as they look to score their first-ever point in a World Cup tournament. They are now turning their attention toward their next group stage fixture against France in Philadelphia.
