Girona has officially announced the appointment of Quique Alvarez as the new head coach of their first team. The 50-year-old manager takes over from Michel, signing a contract for one season.
The club's management decided against looking for an external candidate, choosing instead to continue focusing on their internal structure. Alvarez is well-acquainted with the club's philosophy, having spent the last two years in charge of the reserve team. Under his leadership, Girona B achieved notable results, including promotion from the Tercera RFEF to the Segunda RFEF.
Alvarez's ability to develop young talent and work with academy prospects was a deciding factor for the board. His coaching staff will include his brother Oscar Alvarez as an assistant and Jordi Balcells, who will oversee the team's physical preparation. Both are already familiar with the club's internal processes.
Quique Alvarez brings significant football experience to the role. As a player, he came through the Barcelona academy and played professionally for over fifteen years, most notably with Villarreal. Following his playing career, he gained coaching experience within the Barcelona system and served on the coaching staffs at Villarreal, Alaves, and Levante.
The new manager faces a clear and ambitious goal: to lead Girona back to La Liga after the team was relegated last season.
