UEFA has sanctioned four Premier League clubs for failing to comply with financial sustainability and squad cost regulations. Newcastle United and Aston Villa have emerged as the most heavily affected by the recent rulings.
Newcastle United has entered a three-year settlement agreement with the Club Financial Control Body (CFCB) after failing to meet the "football earnings rule." The club must achieve full compliance by the 2028-29 season, with a €10m total fine, of which €7m remains conditional. The club is now under strict UEFA supervision regarding its squad management and financial reporting.
Separately, Aston Villa, Chelsea, Newcastle United, and Nottingham Forest were found to have breached the "squad cost rule," which limits spending to 70% of a club's revenue for the 2025 calendar year.
UEFA noted that Aston Villa and Chelsea have shown signs of improvement in their financial trajectories, allowing for a portion of their fines to remain conditional on further progress. UEFA
Aston Villa faces a total fine of €22.5m, while Chelsea has been fined €3m. Due to "significant" breaches, both Aston Villa and RC Strasbourg also face restrictions on registering new players for UEFA competitions. The clubs must now meet annual targets to avoid further, more severe sporting sanctions, including potential exclusion from European competition.
