Austria is set to play its first World Cup knockout match in 72 years. Following a miraculous 3-3 draw against Algeria, secured by a 96th-minute goal from Sasa Kalajdzic, Ralf Rangnick's side will face Spain this Thursday in the Round of 16.
Midfielder Florian Grillitsch described the team's late-game heroics as a moment of pure ecstasy that boosted their morale. Defender Philipp Mwene echoed this sentiment, acknowledging the challenge while remaining optimistic:
Even if Spain is an apparently overpowering opponent, we have a chance to make it through. The match against Algeria has brought us even closer together. Philipp Mwene
Despite the momentum, the team faces concerns over the fitness of key players like David Alaba and Marko Arnautovic. Furthermore, the squad has struggled to replicate the high-intensity pressing style that defined their performance at the last European Championship.
The team arrived in Los Angeles on Tuesday for what is already considered a historic encounter. The Austrian Football Federation has arranged a public screening at its campus stadium to mark the country's first appearance in a World Cup knockout game since 1954, when the team finished third in the tournament held in Switzerland.
