Aston Villa's summer of sales: Europa League heroes depart
Following their Europa League triumph, Aston Villa are forced to offload key players to comply with financial regulations.

After lifting the Europa League trophy in May, Aston Villa's squad is undergoing a drastic transformation. The club has already parted ways with three key stars, and that number could rise to six by the end of the transfer window as Unai Emery faces a challenging rebuilding project.
High-profile exits include Ezri Konsa, whose move to Arsenal is nearing completion for £51m. They have already lost Youri Tielemans and Morgan Rogers, with the latter’s £117m switch to Chelsea setting a record for an English player. Furthermore, Lucas Digne has joined PSG, while the club is still seeking a solution for goalkeeper Emi Martinez following a failed move to Juventus.
The necessity for these sales stems from strict financial regulations. Aston Villa must comply with UEFA's squad cost ratio and the Premier League's Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR). After receiving two fines for breaches, the club is under intense pressure to balance the books, with a mandate to break even by the 2026-27 season.
Despite the upheaval, optimism remains at Villa Park. Captain John McGinn has publicly backed the club's structure and the managerial expertise of Unai Emery, who has consistently improved the team since taking charge. The club is now shifting its focus toward younger talent, with the recent arrival of 17-year-old striker Brian Madjo, who scored on his debut against PSG, signaling a new strategic direction.
The pressure is firmly on Emery to replicate his past successes with a significantly altered squad. As the former Villa executive noted, the manager remains the club's "ace card," though the challenge of replacing so many established players in one window remains substantial.
