John McGinn insists Aston Villa have 'no ceiling' ahead of Super Cup final vs PSG
John McGinn and Unai Emery share their ambitions for Aston Villa's UEFA Super Cup clash against PSG in Salzburg, despite a significantly changed squad.
Ahead of the UEFA Super Cup final against PSG in Salzburg, Aston Villa captain John McGinn has insisted that the club has 'no ceiling' for its ambitions. The match serves as a rematch of the 2024-25 Champions League quarter-final, a tie where Villa proved they could compete at the highest level despite a 5-4 aggregate defeat.
However, the squad heading into Wednesday's final is vastly different from the one that pushed PSG to the limit 18 months ago. Key departures including Morgan Rogers, Lucas Digne, and Youri Tielemans, combined with a long-term injury to Amadou Onana and the absence of several stars following World Cup duties, leave Unai Emery with a selection headache. Only four starters from that previous quarter-final clash are expected to feature in Austria.
Despite the turnover, McGinn remains steadfast in his belief regarding the club's trajectory.
A lot has changed in the eight years I have been here. We have a structure in place, standards and rules which have made us a success. I am really excited about the new Aston Villa. A lot of people thought we reached a ceiling a couple of seasons ago and we proved them wrong. John McGinn
For Unai Emery, the Super Cup represents a trophy that has eluded him throughout his illustrious career. The manager revealed that McGinn has been teasing him about his past record in the competition:
He was reminding me last week. Of course, it is an opportunity. A trophy is something that can give us a special moment. PSG are the favorites but I am looking forward to playing, how we can test this match against PSG with our capacity. Unai Emery
A boost for the squad comes in the form of Boubacar Kamara, who returns to the matchday squad as he continues his recovery from a knee injury. Over 6,000 traveling fans will be in attendance to see if Emery can finally secure the title that has haunted him.
