Alphonso Davies may miss Canada's World Cup opener
Canada head coach Jesse Marsch has indicated that captain Alphonso Davies is unlikely to be fit for the team's opening World Cup match against Bosnia and Herzegovina.
Canada head coach Jesse Marsch has provided an update on the fitness of captain Alphonso Davies. The defender, who suffered a hamstring injury during the Champions League semi-final second leg against PSG, is unlikely to feature in Canada's opening 2026 World Cup match against Bosnia and Herzegovina on June 12.
Marsch explained that the national team is working closely with Bayern Munich on a recovery plan. Davies will continue his initial rehabilitation with the club until May 28, followed by a short rest period. He is scheduled to join the national squad on May 31 to continue his preparation.
I don't think he'll be ready for June 12, but we'll see. We have to build a process for him that doesn't create additional risk and allows for a safe return to play. Jesse Marsch
The coach emphasized that the team will take a cautious approach, gradually increasing the player's workload. Potential game time may be introduced in friendlies following the opening fixtures against Bosnia, Qatar, and Switzerland. Despite his disappointment, Davies is highly motivated to recover and has received full support from both his club and national team staff.
