South Africa defensive midfielder Yaya Sitole has become the first player to receive a red card at the 2026 World Cup. The incident occurred in the 50th minute of the tournament's opening match against Mexico at the Estadio Azteca in Mexico City.
The 27-year-old was dismissed after committing a professional foul on Bryan Gutierrez, who was clear through on goal. The referee produced a straight red card without hesitation, leaving the African side a man down.
It has been a difficult match for Sitole. In the 9th minute, he committed a costly error near his own penalty area, losing possession under pressure. Julian Quinones capitalized on the mistake to score the opening goal of the tournament. Following the red card, Mexico has continued to press their numerical advantage as they maintain their 1-0 lead.
