The group stage of the 2026 World Cup is reaching its peak. The final round of matches will be decisive for many teams aiming to qualify for the unprecedented Round of 32, a knockout stage that will gather 32 teams before the traditional Round of 16.
Competition for the remaining spots is wide open. FIFA has established strict tie-breaking criteria for the best third-placed teams: goal difference in all group matches, number of goals scored, Fair Play points, and finally, the FIFA Men's World Ranking position at the time of the tournament start.
Currently, Sweden, Scotland, and Croatia lead the standings among the third-placed teams, each with three points. However, the table remains volatile, with teams like Algeria, Paraguay, and Cape Verde still in the hunt depending on the results of the final matches.
The final round begins with simultaneous matches, marking the conclusion of the group stage. The eight best third-placed sides will join the top two teams from each group to complete the bracket for the next phase of the tournament.
