Forward Julian Alvarez is reportedly considering a unilateral termination of his contract with Atletico Madrid. This legal strategy would potentially allow him to sign for Barcelona without the need to activate his 500 million euro release clause.
Under Spanish labor regulations for professional athletes, a player can initiate a contract termination. If the club and player fail to agree on compensation, the final amount is determined by a court, considering all relevant circumstances. The new club, in this case, Barcelona, would bear subsidiary liability for the payment.
The Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) is required to register the player, ensuring his right to work while the legal dispute is ongoing. It is noted that FIFA does not have the jurisdiction to intervene in disputes between two Spanish clubs.
The situation draws comparisons to the Antoine Griezmann case from 2019. Julian Alvarez has reportedly expressed his desire to leave Atletico and has previously stated his ambition to play for Barcelona.
