FIFA updates pre-match ceremony protocol for World Cup
FIFA has introduced a major protocol change for the World Cup, requiring all squad players and substitutes to assemble together for national anthems.
FIFA has announced a significant shift in pre-match rituals for the upcoming World Cup. Historically, only the starting eleven lined up on the pitch for national anthems, but the new template requires all squad members and substitutes to assemble together.
Players and referees will now gather around the centre circle before matches. This adjustment is part of a broader ceremonial initiative designed to emphasize collective participation over individual starting roles.
FIFA president Gianni Infantino stated that the change is intended to create a moment of unity, pride, and emotion for both the teams and the fans in the stadium.
Alongside the player positioning, a redesigned 360-degree ceremony will be implemented. This includes the use of giant national flags and new visual elements, such as player entry arches, aimed at creating an immersive experience for both stadium attendees and television audiences.
Despite these aesthetic updates, core sporting procedures like the coin toss and handshakes will remain unchanged, taking place immediately after the anthems conclude.
The updated guidelines will debut next Thursday at the tournament's opening match between Mexico and South Africa in Mexico City. FIFA officials have indicated that further dramatic elements, such as pyrotechnics or coloured smoke, are planned to be introduced during the knockout rounds.
