Recent red cards in pre-tournament friendly matches have sparked concern and confusion among fans and national teams. The core question remains: do disciplinary sanctions incurred during international friendly windows automatically carry over to official World Cup matches?

According to the FIFA Disciplinary Code, the general rule is that suspensions for red cards in friendly matches are not served during the World Cup. Instead, the player is typically banned only from the national team's subsequent friendly fixture.

However, there are exceptions. If a disciplinary measure is imposed as a "time-based" suspension (e.g., a three-month ban) rather than a "match-based" one, the player is prohibited from participating in any football activity, official or friendly, during that period. Furthermore, in cases of severe misconduct such as discrimination, match manipulation, assault on match officials, or forgery, FIFA may extend the sanction globally, meaning it would apply to the World Cup.

There is also a specific provision for host nations. Article 69.3 of the regulations states that if a team's next official match is in the final tournament, any match-based suspension is transferred to the next friendly match. This reflects FIFA's intention to prevent minor disciplinary issues from sidelining players during the tournament itself.
