One of the Premier League's most intense personal rivalries goes global this Sunday as Norway face Brazil in the World Cup round of 16 at the New York New Jersey Stadium.

Manchester City striker Erling Haaland and Arsenal defender Gabriel have been central figures in their clubs' domestic battles, with their animosity frequently spilling over onto the pitch. The outcome of their latest confrontation will be pivotal in deciding which team advances to the quarter-finals to face either England or Mexico.

The rivalry intensified in September 2024, when Haaland threw the ball at the back of Gabriel's head following a last-minute equalizer. Since then, the pair have traded verbal barbs and provocative celebrations, with Gabriel even mocking Haaland during Arsenal's title celebrations. Former England striker Chris Sutton described the duel as a standout storyline: "We know about the bad feeling between them. This personal confrontation will have a huge influence on the game."

While Brazil, managed by Carlo Ancelotti, enter the match as favorites, they face a statistical quirk: they have never beaten Norway in four previous attempts. Norway, led by playmaker Martin Odegaard, remain confident in their ability to cause an upset.

Sutton noted that discipline will be key: "They will be relishing the duel, but it will also be about staying on the right side of the line. When Haaland pulls on Gabriel, or Gabriel moves towards Haaland, the referee will need to be sharp."
