The new Premier League season began with a shock for Tottenham, who fell to a 3-0 defeat against Brentford. Despite a massive £237 million investment in the squad, Roberto De Zerbi’s team looked disjointed in their opening fixture.
De Zerbi handed starting roles to four marquee summer arrivals, including club-record £100m signing Sandro Tonali and the defensive trio of Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi, and Jan Paul van Hecke. However, Brentford’s record signing Mamadou Sangare proved the difference-maker, setting up Keane Lewis-Potter for the opening goal in the 12th minute. Vitaly Janelt doubled the lead in the 33rd minute after Antonin Kinsky parried an initial effort.
The second half offered no reprieve for the visitors. Following a series of tactical shifts at the break, Brentford extended their lead in the 49th minute through Michael Kayode. While the Bees missed an opportunity to make it four from the penalty spot—with Igor Thiago hitting the post—the hosts remained in complete control until the final whistle.
This result equals Tottenham's joint-heaviest opening-day Premier League defeat, matching their 3-0 loss to Manchester United in the 2011-12 season. The lack of chemistry among the new recruits leaves De Zerbi with significant work to do before his side can establish themselves this term.
Spurs now look to reset their campaign when they host Charlton Athletic in the EFL Cup this Wednesday. They will then turn their attention to a critical league clash against Newcastle United on August 29.
