Japan received a significant boost as midfielder Takefusa Kubo returned to training, raising hopes for his involvement in the crucial Round of 16 clash against Brazil.
Kubo had been sidelined since the tournament opener against the Netherlands, missing the group stage fixtures against Tunisia and Sweden due to a knee injury. On Friday, the Real Sociedad playmaker participated in ball work, marking a positive step in his recovery ahead of Monday's match at NRG Stadium in Texas.
While Japan head coach Hajime Moriyasu has not yet confirmed whether the 25-year-old will start, his progress has generated optimism. Kubo is considered one of the team's brightest creative talents and is a key option for the coaching staff.
In his only appearance at the 2026 World Cup, Kubo provided an assist for Keito Nakamura's goal. If he is cleared to play, he will likely compete with Junya Ito for the starting spot on the right wing.
