Scotland's World Cup 2026 campaign is in jeopardy following a chastening 3-0 defeat by Brazil. Having finished third in Group C with three points, the Scots must now rely on other results to see if they can secure one of the eight best third-place spots in the last 32.
Head coach Steve Clarke was blunt in his post-match assessment, admitting he expects the team to head home. "We made it difficult for ourselves," he said. "We gave them the goals, we gave them the game they wanted. For sure I think we're going home."
We lose poor goals at poor times against a team that can punish you with quality. The lads are gutted, we fell short on quality but we gave it absolutely everything. John McGinn
Brazil dominated the match with a brace from Vinicius Jr and a goal from Mateus Cunha. Defensive errors from Scott McKenna, Nathan Patterson, and goalkeeper Angus Gunn proved costly, allowing the Brazilians to capitalise on their superior quality throughout the night in Miami.
While Opta data suggests a 42% chance of qualification, the mood within the Scottish camp remains grim. The team must now wait until Sunday to discover if their tournament journey will continue or come to an abrupt end.
