Marcelo Bielsa has officially confirmed he will step down as head coach of the Uruguay national team once the 2026 World Cup concludes. The 70-year-old Argentine has been in charge of the national side since 2023.
Under Bielsa’s guidance, Uruguay secured a bronze medal finish at the 2024 Copa America. Speaking to El Pais, the coach emphasized the significance of the World Cup in a professional career.

Bielsa brings a wealth of experience to his coaching career, having previously managed the Argentina national team, as well as clubs such as Espanyol, Athletic Bilbao, Lille, Marseille, Lazio, and Leeds.
For the upcoming 2026 World Cup, Uruguay has been drawn into Group H, where they are set to face Spain, Cape Verde, and Saudi Arabia.
