France captain Kylian Mbappe has admitted that he needs to transform his playing style to guide his nation to 2026 World Cup glory. Ahead of the team's Group I opener against Senegal, the Real Madrid forward addressed long-standing criticism regarding his defensive contribution.
In an interview with Le Parisien, Mbappe expressed his commitment to the team's success: "I need to take another step forward defensively. I'm ready to do things right because I want the World Cup at all costs! It's something that's important for teams, and I think I have to do it."
Despite external noise, Mbappe retains the full support of his teammates. Ballon d'Or winner Ousmane Dembele recently defended his captain against excessive scrutiny, emphasizing that he remains the focal point of the squad. The team continues to view him as the essential leader required for the high-pressure environment of the tournament.
Legendary manager Arsene Wenger has also backed the forward, noting that Mbappe was unfairly targeted during a difficult transition period at Real Madrid. Wenger believes the 27-year-old is physically fresh and primed to make a major impact in the United States.
Mbappe, who has already netted 12 goals across the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, is now closing in on Miroslav Klose's all-time record of 16 goals. If he successfully integrates this improved defensive work rate into his lethal finishing, France will be a formidable force in their quest for the trophy.
