Former Chelsea and Leeds United owner Ken Bates has died at the age of 94. The club announced that Bates passed away peacefully in Monaco on Saturday morning, surrounded by his wife and family.
Bates famously purchased Chelsea for £1 in 1982 when the club was struggling in the old Second Division. He inherited significant debts of £1.5m but worked to transform the club's fortunes over the next two decades, eventually overseeing their return to the top flight.
In 2003, Bates sold the club to Roman Abramovich in a deal valued at £140m. He remained as chairman for a brief period following the takeover before stepping down in 2004.

The club expressed their heartfelt condolences to Bates' wife, Suzannah, and his family and friends, acknowledging his lasting impact on the team during a challenging era for Stamford Bridge.
