France head coach Didier Deschamps has returned to the team in the United States following the funeral of his mother, Ginette Deschamps. During his absence, a documentary by beIN Sports revealed a deeply personal letter he had written to his long-time assistant, Guy Stephan, which left the assistant in tears.
The two have worked together since 2012, building a partnership that saw them win the 2018 World Cup. In the message, Deschamps reflected on their long journey and the unspoken understanding they have developed over more than a decade.
Our connection reached a level where we no longer need to speak; often, a glance is enough for us to understand each other. Offering you this position as assistant coach was undoubtedly one of the best decisions I have made in my career. Didier Deschamps
The disclosure of the letter carries significant weight, as this is the final World Cup for the pair at the helm of the French national team. Stephan was visibly moved when he read the message before Deschamps departed for France to attend the private family ceremony.
During the head coach's brief absence, Stephan led the team to a 4-1 victory over Norway in their final group stage match. The players, aware of the coach's situation, reportedly performed with high motivation to support their leader. Deschamps has now resumed his duties alongside Stephan as they prepare for the crucial knockout match against Sweden on July 1st.
